Joyce Curry-Daly and James Daly Memorial Scholarship
The scholarship named in recognition of Joyce Curry-Daly and James Daly, seminal members of the Statistics Department, is used to support the long-term academic pursuits of worthy statistics majors.
Joyce was a graduate of the Cal Poly Mathematics Department and a lecturer in statistics from 1970 until her death in September 1997. She supervised the department tutors and worked for many years with the SMART program, which encouraged underprivileged students to develop a strong interest in mathematics and science in junior high so that they could pursue these subjects at the college level.
James was the first chair of the Statistics Department, shepherding the new department into existence. After stepping down as department chair, he continued to have a distinguished career as teacher and mentor to many students.
James started the scholarship fund shortly after Joyce’s death to support her strong commitment to education. After James lost his battle with cancer in 2011, the scholarship was renamed to keep the memory of both of these wonderful teachers alive. As new contributions augment the scholarship fund, we hope to increase the number of students who receive financial support.
