Gail Potter

I am excited to join the Cal Poly Statistics Department. I discovered my love of teaching as a Peace Corps volunteer in Nepal, where I taught math and English in a rural area. My experiences living in Nepal and Africa inspired me to focus my research on public health topics. As a graduate student at the University of Washington and a post doc at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, I’ve developed methods to estimate networks of face-to-face social contacts to improve our understanding of infectious disease transmission.

I enjoy interdisciplinary collaboration and look forward to building partnerships with Cal Poly faculty in a variety of fields. I love making statistical concepts clear, intuitive and straightforward when talking with friends, students and collaborators. I look forward to bringing my enthusiasm for statistics into the classroom, growing as a teacher and connecting with students during this intense and important period of their lives.

Originally from Washington DC, I love the west. I got the impression that San Luis Obispo is an idyllic, possibly unbeatable place to live. Moreover, I was impressed by the collegiality and dedication of the Cal Poly statistics faculty and staff.
