Statistics Student Wins Second Place in National Undergraduate Statistics Project Competition
Jimmy Wong has been busy. Over the last year, the senior statistics major has programmed apps for statistics education, presented at national conferences, and worked on research projects with two professors. Not to mention winning second place in the National Undergraduate Statistics Project Competition.
Students Hack Real-World Data at DataFest
Hundreds of statistics undergraduates; one giant, real-world data set; and 48 hours to come up with something good — welcome to DataFest. Two teams of Cal Poly statistics students traveled to UCLA in April for this statisticians' version of a hackathon, competing against 50 teams from five universities.
Statistics Students Take Infrared Video of the Moon
Cal Poly statistics students may have been the first in the world to take thermal, infrared, digital video of the moon from Earth's surface. Flir Systems Inc. donated an infrared video camera that students connected to a telescope. They then took the telescope system to White Mountain Research Center near Bishop, Calif., and spent the month of August recording the surface temperature of the moon.

Cal Poly Student Named to SAS Student Ambassador Program
A fourth-year Cal Poly statistics student was named an SAS Student Ambassador — one of seven in the nation and only two in California — for innovative use of analytics in research. Isabel Litton presented her research at the SAS Global Forum, a gathering of more than 5,000 business and information technology SAS software users, held April 27 in Dallas.
