Support New Facilities for Statistics
A new undergraduate research building at the heart of campus will transform student learning.
The Statistics Department will be part of a new undergraduate research facility that will be built at the heart of campus, just north of the Baker Center. The building will contain computational labs and student collaboration spaces available to statistics and mathematics students.
Cal Poly's Learn by Doing Mission
Jimmy Wong, B.S., Statistics, 2015
I was prepared to approach data that required a method I wasn't familiar with because I had the experience of learning and doing research independently.
About one third of statistics majors do real-world research with faculty mentors. Student-faculty research strengthens curiosity and imagination, teaches critical thinking and collaboration, and encourages innovation and entrepreneurial spirit. Through these Learn by Doing experiences, statistics students engage with types of data analysis they would otherwise never encounter as undergraduates.
Three colleges are working together on this cutting-edge project: the College of Science and Mathematics, the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences, and the College of Liberal Arts. The interdisciplinary facility will allow statistics students to collaborate with their peers across campus.
How You Can Help
Your Contribution Will Make a Difference
Thanks to a generous donor, much of the funding for the science and mathematics section of the building is secured, but we still need your help. The College of Science and Mathematics needs to raise an additional $5 million to complete the science and math section of the building.
Your contribution will give statistics students much-needed collaboration and computational space. Gifts of all sizes will make a difference. Gifts of $5,000 and above will be recognized on the donor wall, and pledges can be paid over five years.
